Winter Solstice Immune-Boosting Smoothie Recipes

It’s winter solstice today, the shortest day of the year - which means more daylight is on the way! In many cultures around the world, special traditions & celebrations are observed and held on this day to signify the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days.

In the centuries past, without modern technologies (especially the digital distractions), our ancestors lived at a much slower and more in-tune-with-nature pace. Seasons’ changes, daylight saving, tidal movements… were observed closely and ascribed deep meaning. To survive and thrive, one must tune into the changes of nature: eat in-season foods, rise and rest as the sun comes up and goes down, dress in garments made with natural materials, and so forth.

As modern humans, we often let the ‘convenience’ brought by the modern technologies take over our natural instincts. When the year comes to an end, our to-do lists trump everything else. While we run around frantically, trying to check every item off our lists, we tend to put our health on the backburner. We consume too much “fast” food. We don’t give our bodies enough time to rest and recover. Also, it doesn’t help that the promise of a new year’s resolution (when, for sure, we’ll finally get all “caught up”) tricks our mind into further ignoring the red lights our bodies are sending out: the lingering cold, the recurrent respiratory issues, the allergies… the list goes on.

So, it’s important to dig deep into that ancestral instinct; reset and realign your ‘system’ as the days grow longer. And remember to pause and give yourself some room to breathe (and to cherish) no matter where you’re at on your list. One of the easiest practices is to make healthy, immune-boosting winter smoothies using in-season vegetables and fruits. You may be surprised by the variety of winter vegetables and fruits available. With rich & deep shades of colors, they are packed with antioxidants and nutrients ‘designed’ by nature to nourish our bodies and minds in the cold season. Don’t believe us? Take a peek at just a few of the following on your next trip to the market: beets, winter squashes, persimmon, kale, and blood orange.

Using these amazing winter vegetables and fruits as a base for our smoothies, we tested more than 10 recipes over a period of three days. We not only saw a boost in our energy levels, but our skin has improved as well. To top it all off, it’s such a fun and healthy ritual to practice in the family each day. We are sharing our top three favorite recipes below. Be sure to follow our Instagram Stories and Highlights (@ziraffe_store) for all the smoothie recipes we tried.
